Obituary of Janice E. Davis


Janice E. Davis, 80, of Honey Flats Rd., passed away, Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019 at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, NY, surrounded by her nine children, grandchildren and friends.

Born on April 16, 1939, at Mercy Hosptial, Watertown, NY, she was a daughter of Ronald and Esther Wallace Houghtaling. She attended Alexandria Bay Schools and graduated from Evans Mills High School in 1956. Then she graduated from the Utica School of Cosmetology in 1957. For a time, she worked at the Paddock Arcade Beauty Salon, Watertown, NY.

Janice met Wendell A. Davis at a Pamelia Grange Dance and they were married on July 19, 1958 at the Pamelia Community Church with the Rev. George H. Pilbeam, then pastor, officiating. Following marriage, the couple farmed for Fred Stevens and resided on Perch Lake Rd., then they farmed for Ronald Houghtaling (Janice's father), until purchasing a farm on the Honey Flats Rd., in 1967. Mr. Davis passed away May 21, 1994 and Janice continued to live at the farm until 2014 when she moved in with her daughter, Patricia.

She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Orleans Four Corners and secretary for the Church Council and Ladies Aide, member of the Easter Milk Producers, Jefferson County Home Bureau and Strough Crossing, Paynter Senior Citizens Center Board, Children's Home of Jefferson County Ladies Auxiliary Board and the Town of Orleans Council of Churches.

Janice was always happy, smiling, and laughing. She enjoyed painting, crafting, sewing, quilting, making cards, country music and dancing. She also loved going to concerts, traveling to Nashville, TN and Branson, MO, watching the Grand Ole Opry, playing cards, birds, watching game shows and the Young and the Restless, and most of all spending time with her children, grandchildren, family and friends.

Survivors include nine children; son, David Davis and companion, Rosie Houghtaling, Evans Mills, NY; son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Joan Davis, LaFargeville, NY; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Wendy Davis, LaFargeville, NY; son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Judy Davis, Antwerp, NY; son and daughter-in-law, Rory and Susan Davis, LaFargeville, NY; daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Thomas Johnston, LaFargeville, NY; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Terry Valin, LaFargeville, NY; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Nathan Sourwine, LaFargeville, NY; son and daughter-in-law, Robbie and Joy Davis, LaFargeville, NY; 26 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; a sister, Karen Roy, Rochester, NY.

Her parents, her husband, a granddaughter, Cassandra Running and a brother, Paul Houghtaling (in infancy) died previously.

Funeral Services will be 11 am, Thursday, April 25, 2019 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Orleans Four Corners with Pastor Allan J. Ferguson and Pastor Norma Gee, officiating. Burial will be in Grove Cemetery, LaFargeville, NY. Family and friends will gather at the LaFargeville American Legion following burial.

Calling hours will be 3-6 pm Wednesday, April 24 at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, NY.
