Albert Spencer Payne, 91, of Gordon Court Apartments died Sunday evening at his home while under the care of Hospice and his family.
Born January 26, 1919 son of the late Elmer and Dora Kring Payne. He attended and graduated from LaFargeville High School.
Mr. Payne was a civil worker at Pine Camp, now Fort Drum, starting August 1941 until June 1946 as Chief Cook at the hospital there. He then was a farmer at his family's farm from 1940 until 1971. He also worked in construction from 1953 to 2005 as an independent contractor and as owner and operator of Payne's Acres, Theresa.
June 26, 1940 he married Pearl Graham at the Redwood Lutheran Parsonage in a double wedding with his brother Kring and his wife Frieda.
He was the Council President for 30 years at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Orleans Four Corners, Orleans. As president in 1981 he oversaw the construction of Hope Hall, an addition to the church for community and Sunday school rooms. He was also a trustee of the West Theresa School and member of Eastern Milk Producers and Farm Bureau (Kitchen Conference). Hobbies included deer hunting and woodworking especially making kitchen cabinets.
Survivors include his wife Pearl, three daughters, Amy and Vernon Staie, Theresa, Norma and Norman Gee, Theresa, Diana and Leon Zimmer, Redwood; two sons, Bob and Marilyn, and Frank Payne, both of Philadelphia; grandchildren including Janet (Kaz), Laura (Patrick), Aaron (Mitzi), Bradley, Brandon (Julie), Penny (Gene), Melinda (Robert), Joel (Laura), Brian (Laurie), Vicky, Danny (Dawn), William (Jennifer); two step-grandchildren, Richard (Terry) and Dennis (Debbie); great-grandchildren including Josh (Pam), Bret, Zoey, Madison (Luke), Megan, Adam, Rachel, Jen (Jay), Eric (Jessica), Trevor, Alex, Elizabeth, Kylie, Anna, Abigail, John, Malcolm, Anika, Maia, Theo, and T'Kai; step-great-grandchildren including Logan, Carla (Bob), Madison, Landon, Stephanie, Christine (Don), Connor, Donny (Stacy); great-great-grandchildren including Nicole, Kaylynn, Miranda, Allie, Callie, Cory, Athen, Brooke, Bobby, and Taylor; one brother-in-law George Graham; five sister-in-law's, Rose Pavia, Moya (Francis) Gaynor, Joan Babcock, Shirley Graham, and Francis (Dwight) Wright; several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Payne is predeceased by a grandson Michael Payne; three sisters and their husbands, Gratanna (William) Getman, Geneva (Carl) Chawgo, Grace (Wesley) Klock; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Lynwood Payne and Kring (Frieda) Payne; one sister-in-law Joyce Graham; three brother-in-law's, Burt Pavia, Earl Babcock, and Jim Graham; and five nephews, Dale Wright, Guy Babcock, Frank Pavia, Krist Klock, and Lynwood Klock.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 am at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Orleans Four Corners with the Rev. Bruce Schrader officiating. Burial will follow in Orleans Four Corners Cemetery.Calling hours will be 4 to 7 pm Friday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Inc, Theresa. Arrangements are with Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Inc.
