Obituary of Helene Lanphear
Helene M. Lanphear, 75, died Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at her home surrounded by family following a cancer battle.
Born Jan. 16, 1943 in Montreal, Quebec, the daughter of Raoul and Gertrude (Gagne) Chenier, she attended French-speaking schools before moving to Evans Mills where she worked at her uncle Bill Cheney’s restaurant.
She married Homer Lanphear on Dec. 30, 1961. They had seven children before divorcing in 1985.
While raising their children, Helene received her GED in 1971and later took several college courses. Fluently bilingual and a voracious reader, she sought out opportunities to learn new things all her life.
Helene was employed as a direct care worker at JRC for 28 years before retiring in 2011. She continued to work part-time until October when her fight against the cancer intensified.
She is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law; Steven R. Lanphear, of Boothwyn, Pa.; Daniel J. Lanphear, of Denville, N.J.; Ryan S. and Jill Lanphear, of Watertown and Shawn M. and Rebecca Lanphear of Palm Harbor, Florida; a daughter and son-in-law, Marcia M. and Joe Moore, of Selinsgrove, Pa.; nine grandchildren that brought her the most joy; David, Austin, Analee, Gavin, Ava, Adele, Alex, Jack and Amy; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Pierre and Sandra Cheney, of Bradenton, Florida, and Francois and Marie-Claudette Chenier of Montreal, Que.; two sisters, two-brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Diane Chenier and John Britton; Madeleine Chenier and Monique Thibodeau and Gerard Belanger, all of Montreal, Que.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Two children died before her. A son, Mark J. Lanphear, died in 1995, and a daughter, Lynda A. Frenyea, died in 1996. She is also predeceased by a brother, Raymond Chenier; three sisters, Daniele Belanger, Andree Haynes and Lucie Chenier and a brother-in-law, Freddie Haynes.
She was a faithful believer in Jesus Christ and attended the First Baptist Church of Black River.
Her family would like to thank the nurses at Hospice of Jefferson County, in particular Julie, Denise and Melissa, who helped ease Helene’s pain and discomfort in her final battle before she joined her Father in Heaven.
Calling hours will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home in Theresa.
A funeral service, officiated by Pastor Jack Young, will be 11 a.m. Saturday March 10, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Black River. There will be a spring burial.
