Obituary of Ivan Hale
Ivan J. Hale, 81, of Ore Bed Rd., died Sunday November 26, 2017 at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown, NY with his loving family at his side.
Born on December 11, 1935 in Antwerp, NY, he was a son of Ivan H. and Millicent Haynes Hale. He graduated from Theresa High School in 1951 at the age of 16.
He entered the US Army on January 6, 1955 and was honorably discharged on December 19, 1957.
Ivan married Charlotte Jackson of Harrisville, NY on December 16, 1966 at the Gouverneur United Methodist Church, with Rev. Stanley E. Brown, officiating.
His first job was at St. Regis Paper Co., Deferiet, NY. After his military service he worked for the US Army, Ft. Drum, NY as supply clerk for 30 years, receiving many awards during his career.
Ivan was a member of the Philadelphia American Legion for 40+ years and the Black River Valley Fiddlers and several country bands in the north country.
He started playing the fiddle at age 7, with his two sisters. Their band was known as the Hale Trio. He has been playing the fiddle for 73 years. One of his greatest joys was playing for Bill Monroe at the Grand Ole Opry in 1965 and in 2010 he was inducted into the fiddlers Hall of Fame in Osceola, NY.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Charlotte; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Dale and Elizabeth Hale, Ivan and Brandi Hale and Chad and Natalie Hale, all of Philadelphia, NY; 6 grandchildren, Cassie, Emily, Trevor, Chelsey, Camryn and Millie; a great-granddaughter, Dakota; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Evelyn Hall, Philadelphia, NY, Lillian and Jerry Shampine, Massena, NY; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
His parents and a brother-in-law, Howard Hall died before him.
Funeral Services will be 2 pm Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, NY with Rev. Donald Briant, officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa, NY.
Calling hours will be from 11-2 pm prior to the service.
