Obituary of Elmer Gleason
Elmer C. Gleason, 86, of NYS Rt. 26, passed away Thursday evening, November 16, 2017 at Hospice of Jefferson County at Ellis farm, Watertown, NY, surrounded by his family.
Born on March 11, 1931 in Antwerp, NY, he was a son of Earl and Bertha Worden Gleason and graduated from Philadelphia High School in 1948.
He entered the US Army on March 11, 1952, serving time in Korea and was awarded a Purple Heart with an honorable discharge on February 24, 1954.
Elmer married Rose Henderson at the Philadelphia United Methodist Church on June 6, 1954.
He was a 56 year member and Past Commander of the Philadelphia American Legion, a 57 year member and Past Master of the Philadelphia Masonic Lodge, a 50 year member of the Gouverneur Elks Lodge, a 62 year member of the Philadelphia United Methodist Church and Past President of CSEA.
Elmer was a farmer and bus driver for many years. He started working for the Thousand Island's Park Commission in 1971 as a truck driver for the Wellesley Island State Park and later as their golf course superintendent. A few years later he was promoted to manager of the TI River Parks until his retirement in 1992.
He had a love for horses, music, playing cards, dancing, going to the casino to play slot machines, traveling, spending winters in Florida, camping at Chase Lake and he especially enjoyed mowing his lawn and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Rose; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Marie and Jeffrey Ambrose, Pulaski, NY, Gloria and William Ditter, Gainesville, FL, Susan and Alan Hughes, Canton, NY; 6 grandchildren, Danielle Holden, Jacob Ambrose, Alyssa Hughes, Ryan Hughes, Allie Wilkerson and Makenzie Wilkerson; 4 great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Ruth Hoover, Philadelphia, NY, Edith and Ivan Filiatrault, Antwerp, NY; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Delos and Patricia Gleason, Philadelphia, NY, Roy Gleason and companion, Faye Morris, NC; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
His parents, a son, George E. Gleason, two brothers, Wesley Gleason and Harry Gleason, three sisters, Mary Hall, twins Jean Aldrich and Joanne Preston all died before him.
Funeral Services will be 1 pm Monday, November 20, 2017 at the Philadelphia United Methodist Church with Rev. Chilton McPheeters and Rev. Jane Wagner, officiating. Burial will be in Sanford Corners Cemetery, Calcium, NY. Family and friends will gather at the Philadelphia American Legion following services.
Calling hours will be 2-5 pm Sunday, November 19, 2017 at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, NY with a Masonic Service at 2 pm.
