Phyllis K. Whitmore Marsh, 93, formerly of 8 Main Street died Thursday April 12, 2018 at Carthage Center for Rehabilitation and Health Care, Carthage, NY where she had resided since 2016.
Born June 1, 1924 in Theresa, NY, she was the daughter of Winfield and Lois Graves Kelsey. She graduated from Theresa High School and attended Canton ATI in the dietary program.
A previous marriage to Lyle Swartout ended in divorce. She married James D. Whitmore of Antwerp on November 25, 1950. He died January 13, 1990. She later married Milton Marsh of Antwerp on August 24, 1996. He died September 22, 2015.
Mrs. Marsh was a rural letter carrier from 1972 to 1997. She and James owned and operated a dairy farm on the Spragueville Road from 1952 to 1990. She continued to live on the family farm until marrying Milton in 1996 when the couple moved to the village of Antwerp.
She was a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving in many chairs, was involved in 4-H and many agricultural organizations around the area. She also was the Sunday School Superintendent at the Antwerp Methodist Church and was involved in many religious organizations, was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Antwerp American Legion Auxiliary, became a member of the Congregational Church of Antwerp in 1996, and was a longtime elections inspector.
Survivors include two sons, Sterling Swartout and his companion Janay of Fresno, CA and James Whitmore, Jr and his wife, Mindy of Antwerp; two daughters, Lonetta Swartout of Cooperstown and Karen Thomas of Theresa; a sister, Margaret Hunter of LaFargeville; a son-in-law, Michael Thornton of Fort Myers, FL; four step children, Daryl Marsh and his wife Gail of Theresa, Hal Marsh of Co, Brian Marsh of Gouverneur and Carolyn Marsh of Geneva; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and a great great grandchild, nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Jane Thornton, a grandson, Jack Swartout, a brother, Winfield Kelsey and a step son, Gerard Marsh died before her.
The funeral will be 11 am Tuesday April 17, 2018 at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home with Father Paul Whiltmore officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael's Cemetery, Antwerp.
Calling hours are 4 to 7 pm Monday, April 16. There will be an Order of the Eastern Star service at 6:30 pm.
