Thomas Frank Newberry, 66, of Martin Rd. North, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 16, 2018 at home, surrounded by his wife and family, while under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County.
Born on May 1, 1951 in Gouverneur, NY, he was a son of Arthur George and Claris Maybelle Finley Newberry and graduated from Indian River Central School in 1969.
Tom married Vicki Sixbury of Evans Mills, NY on June 29, 1974 at the Evans Mills Presbyterian Church with Rev. Theodore Tate, officiating.
As a young man, Tom worked on the family farm and then was a driver for Northup Equipment, Antwerp, NY. He started work for the Jefferson County Highway Department, Watertown, NY in June 1971 as a heavy equipment operator and eventually became foreman, retiring in December 2006 and continued to work for 5 summers. He also was a driver for Henderson Equipment, Watertown, NY for a time.
Tom was an avid fireman with 43 years in fire service. Serving in the Antwerp Fire Department for 5 years, he was Fire Chief in 1972 and 1973. He then moved to the Evans Mills Fire Department, currently serving as Commissioner and board member and was a charter member of the Evans Mills Fire District.
Tom was a member of the Antwerp Drum and Bugle Corp since 1971, where he was manager for a time and played the french horn.
He loved golfing, NY Giants Football and traveling, especially to Buffalo for sporting events. Tom recently enjoyed his dream car, a new Corvette. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Vicki; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Tracy and Michael Hart, Watertown, NY and Tammy and Brad Smith, Philadelphia, NY; five grandchildren, Kyle, Kayla, Cortney, Payton and Kendyl; a sister, Nancy Hull, Antwerp, NY; nieces, nephews and cousins.
His parents, a brother, Charles Finley, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Kenneth and Marie Sixbury, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Cynthia and James Kirkby all died previously.
Memorial Services will be 1 pm Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, NY with Rev. Anne Wichelns of St. Andrew's Shared Ministries of Evans Mills, NY, officiating. Private burial will be in Evans Mills Cemetery, at a later date. Family and friends are invited to gather after services at the Evans Mills Fire Department.
Calling hours will be 5-8 pm Friday, January 19, 2018 at the funeral home.
