Douglas C. Gleason




Douglas C. Gleason, 95, of Schell Rd., passed away Monday afternoon, December 11, 2017 at home while under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.


Born on November 26, 1922 in Antwerp, NY, he was a son of Culver and Lillian Smith Gleason and graduated from Antwerp High School in 1940. 


He served in the United States Army from February 1943 until his honorable discharge in March 1946, serving throughout the US and Guam.


He married Ruberta M. Shurtleff on October 16, 1947 in Theresa, NY.  She died March 29, 2013.


Mr. Gleason was a self employed paint contractor, Theresa Town Supervisor for 12 years and director of the Jefferson County Office of the Aging, Watertown, NY.


He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Philadelphia, Antwerp American Legion, Post No. 916, and elder and trustee of Theresa Presbyterian Church, Theresa Rotary and State Wide Action Council of Senior Citizens.


Mr. Gleason was an avid NY Yankees baseball fan, enjoyed watching football, hunting, fishing and worshipping at the Theresa Presbyterian Church with his church family.


The Gleason family recently celebrated Doug’s 95th Birthday with family and friends at the family farm.


Survivors include two sons and two daughters-in-law, Frederick and Joan Gleason, Calcium, NY and Francis and Julie Gleason, Clayton; NY; a daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Daryl Marsh, Theresa; NY a brother and sister-in-law, Morris and Mary Gleason, Philadelphia, NY; a sister, Dorothy Garcia; East Syracuse, NY; a sister-in-law, Sally Gleason, Star Lake, NY; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.


His parents, his wife Ruberta, three grandsons, Douglas W. Gleason, Brandon Gleason and Brooke Gleason, a great-granddaughter, Alanna Lynn Buckley, three brothers, Robert Gleason, Howard Gleason, Wayne Gleason and an infant sister died before him.


The funeral will be 11 am Saturday, December 16, 2017 at the Theresa Presbyterian Church, Theresa, NY with Rev. Robert Shurtleff, Rev. Steven Becker and Rev. Robert Vrooman, officiating.  Family and friends will gather in the church annex following services.  Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Theresa, NY at a later date.


Calling hours will be 4-7 pm Friday, December 15, 2017 with a 6:30 pm Masonic Service and 6:45 pm Legion Service at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa.
