Walter J.Proven, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2017 at his home in Hammond under the care of hospice at the age of 89.
Walter was born August 17, 1927 to Roy P and Mabel (Rose) Proven in Limerick, NY. He attended the West Theresa School.
He married Rena J Seymour on February 1, 1947 in Theresa, NY. She died December 7, 2011.
In 1953 he moved to Hammond where he owned and operated his farm on the Chippewa Bay Road. Walt was well known to area farmers as the go-to for mechanical repairs and used his ingenuity to create and make farm machinery more useful and efficient. He also owned and operated a sawmill with Dan Dunham, later donating the sawmill to the Stone Mills Agricultural Historical Museum in Stone Mills, NY.
He is survived by five children; son and daughter-in-law, Frederick and Lisa, Hammond, daughter Bonnie, Black River, daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Richard Howard, Chippewa Bay, daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Timothy Thivierge, Westampton, NJ and Mary at home, 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Leon Myrrel, Laurence, Robert and Gail Proven; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Eileen Mitchell, Gladys Moss, Shirley and Donald Schell and Ruth and Emmett Kelsey.
In addition to his parents, his son David, daughter-in-law, Linda Mann Proven, granddaughter Miranda Thivierge, great grandson, Drew Howard, three sisters, Betty Proven, Pauline Worden, Marjorie Salisbury and a brother Glenn died before him.
There will be a Graveside service 2 pm Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Pleasant Valley Rd., Hammond, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Stone Mills Agricultural Historical Society or Hospice of St Lawrence County.
